Temporary Visit Visa

If you’re looking to visit the United States temporarily for leisure or business, the B1/ B2 visa maybe ideal for your situation. We will take you through the application process and several dos and don’ts of the visa application process.

The first step is probably gathering enough information for the application process as you visit your respective consulate’s/ embassy’s website where you will fill a DS-160 form to the best of your ability and honesty. You will then be directed to pay a non-refundable application fee that may range anywhere from 160USD. After submitting a duly filled DS-160 form and getting confirmation, an interview may be scheduled with the respective offices.

In the interview, be sure to be cool, calm collected as you keep your answers precise and to the point, be as honest as you can with your answers as the officers mainly try to establish your reasons of visiting the USA as well as your intent to return to your home country. Be sure to carry print outs of the DS-160 confirmation, application fees payment, passports and supporting documents, passport size photographs and your appointment letter. Try not to fumble with your answers and documents as the officers may not be as patient. You may speak to an attorney/immigration expert as you fill your DS-160 form and as you prep for the interview just to get a gist of what to expect, however, questions may differ depending on the consulate and the interviewing officer.

After a successful interview, depending on your country/ embassy you may be asked for a visa issuance fee. Other things to put into account maybe to ensure your passport is valid for your entire stay and at least 6 months after, you may also show your travel/flight itinerary and/ or documents including hotel bookings that demonstrate your business in the USA while alleviating any issues of accommodation and comfort during your stay. The officers at the consulate also tend to get personal as this are the questions likely to be asked:

  • How long do you intend to stay?
  • Purpose of visit? Business/leisure (further follow up questions)
  • Occupation
  • Are you travelling alone?
  • Do you have family in the USA? (further follow up questions)  Have you been in the USA before?  Where will you be staying?

Demonstrating your intent to return home should be key, as you steer clear from anything that may arouse doubts, such as hinting of a plan to get married while on a B1/B2 visitors’ visa. You should also check with your attorney for the best visa to get depending on your situation including a fiancée visa or may be later filing an immigration petition. Also be sure to be well versed with which documents to take to the interview e.g. bank statements, employers statements/leave permits, property/family records that may demonstrate your intent to return home.
